How to Remove Location Data From Photos
Your camera writes coordinates into the file itself. Here is where that data lives, how to strip it on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, and which apps quietly remove it for you.

Take a photo on a modern phone and you record two things at once. The picture, and a small block of text stapled to the file describing how and where it was made. That block is called Exif, and if location services were on, it contains coordinates — frequently precise enough to identify a particular building rather than a general area.
Most people never see it, because gallery apps hide it behind a small info button. It travels with the file anyway. Email the picture, drop it in a chat, upload it to a forum or a classified ad, and the coordinates go along for the ride unless something deliberately removes them. What is actually stored inside a photo file?
Exif metadata sits alongside the pixels: camera make and model, lens, shutter speed, ISO, the date and time to the second, and — when location services are enabled — GPS latitude, longitude and often altitude. Some cameras also record the compass direction the lens was pointing.
Exif has been standard since 1995 and has quietly expanded ever since. The fields that matter for privacy are the GPS ones. A phone with location access granted to the camera writes latitude and longitude into the file at the moment of capture, typically accurate to within a few metres outdoors. Many devices also store altitude, and some record the bearing the camera was facing, which is enough to work out not just where you stood but what you were looking at.
The reason this matters is ordinary rather than dramatic. Photographs of things you want to sell, pictures of a pet in the garden, a snapshot of a new room — all of them are usually taken at home, and all of them carry the same home coordinates. Under European rules, location data is explicitly named as the kind of identifier that turns a file into personal data. The practical version of that is simpler: the photo knows where you live, and it does not ask before telling anyone.
How do I remove location data on an iPhone?
Open the photo, tap Share, then tap Options at the top of the share sheet and switch Location off before you send. For a permanent change, open the photo, swipe up or tap the info button, choose Adjust, then Remove Location, which rewrites the file itself.
- Per share (fastest). Select the photo, tap Share, tap Options at the top of the sheet, turn Location off, then Done and send as normal. The copy that leaves your phone has no coordinates.
- Permanently, one photo. Open it, swipe up on the image (or tap the info button), tap Adjust next to the map, then Remove Location. The stored file loses the tag.
- Permanently, many photos. Select several in the library, tap Share, then scroll down to Remove Location to strip the whole selection at once.
- Stop it happening at all. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. You lose the map view in your own library, which is a real cost — decide whether you want it.
How do I remove it on Android, Mac and Windows?
On Android, open the photo in Google Photos, swipe up for details and remove the location from the map card. On Mac, use Preview's Inspector to delete the GPS tab. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, Details, then Remove Properties and Personal Information.
The Android route depends slightly on your gallery app, but Google Photos is the common case: open the image, swipe up to reveal the details panel, and use the option on the location card to remove it. To stop new photos being tagged, open the camera app's own settings and turn off the location or geotagging toggle — it lives in the camera app rather than the system settings on most devices.
On a Mac, open the file in Preview, choose Tools then Show Inspector, open the info tab and look for a GPS section. Where the file has one, Preview offers to remove it and saves the change straight into the file. On Windows, right-click the image in File Explorer, choose Properties, then the Details tab, then the Remove Properties and Personal Information link at the bottom. Windows will offer either to strip a copy or to clear the selected fields in place; the copy is the safer habit, because it leaves the original intact if you got the selection wrong.
Does uploading to a website strip it automatically?
Large platforms usually do strip Exif on upload, mostly to save storage rather than to protect you. Smaller sites, forums, file hosts, email and most messaging apps often do not. Treat platform stripping as a happy accident, never as your privacy plan.
This is where people get caught out. Someone learns that a big social network removes metadata, generalises it to "the internet removes this", then emails a full-resolution original to a stranger buying a bicycle. Attachments in email are byte-for-byte copies. So are files sent as documents rather than as photos in most chat apps. The stripping behaviour belongs to a specific upload path on a specific service, not to the file and not to the web in general.
Two habits cover almost everything. First, strip before you send rather than hoping the receiving end does it. Second, remember that a screenshot of a photo is a brand-new image with no camera history at all — it is the crudest possible metadata remover, and on a phone it takes two buttons. The trade-off is resolution, so it suits a quick share rather than an archival copy.
A quick way to check any file
- iPhone: open the photo and swipe up. If a map appears, the file is tagged.
- Android: open the photo in Google Photos and swipe up for the details panel.
- Mac: select the file, press Command-I, and look for a More Info section listing latitude and longitude.
- Windows: right-click, Properties, Details, and scroll to the GPS rows near the bottom.
- Any device: if you can see a map of where the picture was taken, so can anyone you send the original to.

If the coordinates are already gone, can the photo still be placed?
Sometimes, yes — from the picture itself. Signage, architecture, vegetation, road markings and light all narrow a location without any metadata. Stripping Exif removes the exact answer, not every clue, which is worth knowing before you assume a scrubbed file is anonymous.
Removing metadata is a real and worthwhile step, and it is the difference between publishing a precise coordinate and publishing a picture. It is not an invisibility cloak.
